Last programme of the season explains the challenges that lie ahead

OUR final online programme of the season tells a few home-truths about what life will be like in Betfred League One post Covid and post relatively reasonable funding from central sources.

The days of the hand-outs are over and all clubs outside Super League, especially those in League One, will find it extremely hard to keep financial heads above water.

The battles ahead are referred to by our club chairman Chris Hamilton and by our coaching consultant Brian McDermott in their notes in a programme which is available for a mere £2.50 via the roughyeds website.

What they have to say about this difficult period in Rugby League history is not to be missed and Brian’s comments about the Oldham players, our fans and also about the club chairman and owner are particularly poignant given that they are his last programme notes as Oldham’s coaching consultant.

The 24-page Roughyed Review is full of news and views with ‘specials’ on Joe Hartley, Max Roberts and our assistant coach Brendan Sheridan; two pages by Dave Naylor on Newcastle Thunder; a World Cup feature; a plea for internal unity within the game by Steve McCormack; and an interesting piece by Ian Wilson on the season that’s now coming to a close as well as a look ahead at the tough times that lie on the horizon for all clubs and for the game as a whole.

It used to be a case of “every minute matters”. Remember that slogan ? Perhaps we should now replace it with “every penny counts” because that is going to be very relevant and very appropriate in the months and years ahead.
