BE it helping out with kit or doing any of the scores of jobs which crop up around a squad of rugby league players across three training sessions a week and Samuel Doyle is your man.
He isn’t too proud or too fussy to get his hands dirty and he’s worth his weight in gold to Stu Littler and Brendan Sheridan because he knows what has to be done and, without having to be asked, he rolls up his sleeves and gets on with it.
Said Samuel:
“Stu (Littler) has changed things round a bit for me. I do all sorts of jobs now, whatever he wants me to do.”
Added Littler:
“Samuel does everything we ask of him. He’s an Oldham lad, and proud of it, and he’ll help out all he can, over and above the call of duty.”
Aged 29, Samuel, as he prefers to be known, is Royton born and bred and he says he will forever be grateful to Roughyeds for bringing him back from a dark place after he had been involved in the Manchester Arena bombing in May, 1917.
He added:
“I was there that night, working for the NHS, and the awful experience left me with quite a severe speech impediment and a complete lack of confidence. My Dad and Chris (Hamilton) are good friends and Chris thought it might help me a lot if I got involved with the club. He was spot-on.
“Since joining the club last season I’ve never looked back and I’ve got a permanent smile on my face. It’s like being part of a very large family.
“I think we are very fortunate people to have a club like Oldham RLFC and to live in a town like ours. I love the town, I love the club and the people who watch Roughyeds are good people too !
“It was tough for everyone last year, but it taught me a few lessons on where we are at and what we can do to make progress. We are doing all sorts of things that have been well documented and I think we can look forward to a very good 2022.”
