Players in good spirits ahead of Hunslet trip

STU Littler will have 23 players available for selection ahead of Sunday’s Betfred League One game at Hunslet.

Jason Muranka (concussion), Sean Slater (knee) and Tommy Brierley (broken leg) are the three on a mid-term to long-term injury list, but everyone else was available at training last night.

The head coach’s initial 21-man squad will be announced soon.

Oldham go to the South Leeds Stadium (3pm kick off) in “good spirits” and looking to put on a much-improved show following last week’s 32-6 defeat at home by Keighley Cougars, one of the favourites for promotion.

Said Littler:

“We’ve had a good chat and the lads are good to go. Hunslet are expected to be in the play-offs come the end of the season , but we’ve done our homework and we know how we want to play.

“Sunday will be all about playing like we have trained to play and playing like we want to play.”

Winger Brierley, on crutches, travelled to training last night from his Yorkshire home in order to meet up again with his colleagues and to assure them that he was okay.

Added Littler:

“We’ll know more about Tommy after he has seen specialists at a fracture clinic in Yorkshire next Thursday, but we’re obviously looking at a few weeks.”

If Roughyeds are to win, they will have to be party poopers, given that Hunslet are billing the game as a Geoff Gunney Celebration Day.

In an emotional ceremony before kick-off, they will name the main stand after the great man and laud his contribution to the Hunslet club and to Rugby League in general.

Older fans will remember second-row forward Gunney as one of Rugby League’s greatest. He died in 2018 at the age of 84, having been awarded the MBE for his services to the greatest game.

He remained loyal to Hunslet in an amazing career from 1951 to 1973, amassing a staggering 579 appearances and scoring 125 tries.

Capped 11 times by Great Britain, he was regarded as one of the finest forwards of his time.

Our supporters group, YEDS, will run a coach to the game, leaving the Fox and Pine between noon and 12.30pm, but there are only five places left so hurry if you wish to book.

The cost is £10 adults and £5 for children with a paying adult.

The Fox and Pine is a real-ale pub situated in the town centre and with easy access to buses and trams. It has become a town centre base for YEDS, who hope to run buses from there to all away games apart from London Skolars and Cornwall.
