Chris and his Jubilee torch

THERE was a good representation of Roughyeds folk in the town centre last night for the Platinum Jubilee Beacon Lighting.

Club chairman Christpher Hamilton was honoured to be one of the 70 torch bearers, who processed from the Civic Centre to Oldham Parish Church where the Jubilee beacon was set alight in the church grounds.

Each of the 70 was nominated by fellow Oldhamers as a thank-you for their devotion to the town and their work for the local community.

Craig Harris was MC and there were speeches by the Mayor, Councillor Elaine Garry and the leader of Oldham Council, Councillor Amanda Chadderton.

A prayer for the Platinum Jubilee was offered up by the Rev Canon Jean Hurlston, Dean of Oldham and associate vicar of Oldham Parish Church.

The Oldham Scottish Pipe Band accompanied the torch procession and then performed in the Parish Church grounds, as did a choir from Oldham Choral Society.

A number of Roughyeds supporters were there including a former Mayor, Ginny Alexander and Councillor Ros Birch.

Also present were club photographer David Murgatroyd and his son Nathan and club media manager Roger Halstead with his wife Valerie.

Church bell ringers closed the event before refreshments were served in church where everyone watched, in colour, a giant-screen re-run of Coronation footage from 1953.

The Church gardens were lit until 11pm – and how wonderful it all looked.
