WE welcome local dignitaries, including Councillor Pam Byrne, chairwoman of Saddleworth Parish Council, sponsors, former players and officials of London Skolars to the Vestacare Stadium tomorrow for our penultimate home game of the Betfred League One season, kick-off 3pm.
Former players at the game will include Bob Mordell and Billy Broomhead, who are to receive their Heritage certificates, and those two post-war stalwarts of more than 900 games between them, Martin Murphy and Mike Elliott.
Well-known Aussie rugby league journalist Steve Mascord, one of the sport’s top pundits in modern times, will be part of the Skolars party.
Our ambassador’s table in the hospitality suite, organised by Adrian Alexander and his wife Ginny, a former Mayor of Oldham, will include several local dignitaries, including Councillor Byrne, who is not only chair of Saddleworth Parish Council for the second time, but is also an Oldham Councillor for Saddleworth North.
She will be accompanied by her grandson Jack Harrison-Brown, who plays league for Lincoln University after playing for Saddleworth Rangers since he was a small boy.
Her late husband Brian played rugby union, but Pam has followed league thanks to her two grandsons.
Her charity committee, led by her daughter Helen, supports Prevent Breast Cancer; Saddleworth Riding for the Disabled; and other small groups locally including those helping young people with disabilities in education, sport and music.
As we are placed seventh and Skolars are only one place and one point behind us and chasing not only a league double but their first-ever win in Oldham, it promises to be a very competitive and closely-contested game.
After this we’ve only one more home game until next year so don’t miss the chance to welcome home an Oldham team that won in Worcestershire last time out to retain their standing as the only team that can still edge into the play-offs from outside the top six.
