THREE local lads represented England with pride when the Community Lions beat France in the final to win the under-19s European Championship in Italy.
Centre Callum Murphy (Waterhead), loose-forward Scott Parnaby (Waterhead) and prop Dylan Turner (St Anne’s) all played in England’s impressive 14-12 win and Parnaby was later named as one of three England players in the team of the tournament.
The squad dedicated their win to Gary McMahon, a member of their coaching staff, whose death last weekend, in Italy, stunned the whole Rugby League community.
France led 8-0 at half-time, but the England boys, galvanised by both Gary’s death and that of Her Majesty The Queen, hit back superbly to emerge victorious
They reached the final by qualifying through the group stage and then beating Wales in the semi-final.
Oldham RLFC offers its congratulations to all the England boys, but especially to the three from our own borough, Callum, Dylan and Scott. Great stuff chaps! Well done! Our heartiest congratulations.
