Players Ass'n membership up to 60 and still growing

THE Oldham Players’ Association now has 60 paid-up members (£10 a year) and it continues to grow thanks partly due to the ongoing circulation of 1,400 Heritage certificates.

”They have gone to former players all over the world, but we still have a great deal of them to hand out,"

said the Heritage’s Mike Turner, who hopes the recent connection with Chris Chisnall will encourage other ‘old boys’ to join the Players’ Association.

Chris got in touch with Association secretary** Joe Warburton** after seeing a relevant post on social media. Joe put Chris in touch with one of his old Roughyeds teammates, Les Chadwick, and they were in contact for the first time in 38 years — proof of the benefits of social media and the Heritage Certificate scheme.

More are hoped to be distributed at two forthcoming events – this Friday’s Oldham RLFC Anniversary dinner at the Oldham Event Centre (7 for 7.30) and the Players’ Association’s social night at Springhead Sports and Social Club on the following Friday, December 2.

Tickets for the social event at Springhead are £10 including potato pie, comedian and music supplied by Bing Findlater, and they can be obtained over the bar at Springhead S and S Club or from Joe Warburton or John Watkins.

The weekly get together of anyone interested in Oldham RL Club, past, present or potentially in the future, tomorrow lunchtime at Heyside Cricket Club is OFF this week because of work being done at HCC, but it will be back as usual next Tuesday lunchtime, November 29.

Organisers feel there is a real need for some people with a collective interest to get together socially on a regular basis and Joe Warburton, of the Players’ Assn, has taken on the task of organising it. That’s every Tuesday lunchtime at Heyside CC, NOT tomorrow, but restarting on Tuesday of next week.

Finally, Nicola Winslade-Gregory, daughter of Charlie Winslade, our second-row star of the record-breaking 50s team, has been made an honorary member of the association on behalf of her Dad, who has an avenue named after him on the private housing development that now occupies the site of the old Watersheddings ground.

Nicola, who has relatives in Oldham on her Mum’s side, lives with her own family in Bridgend, South Wales, but she has said she will be delighted to attend a Players’ Association event if at all possible in the future.

PLEASE note that our home and away games v Cornwall next season, on Sunday, May 7 and Sunday, August 6 respectively, will both kick-off at 1pm , thus providing part-time players with work to go to on Monday mornings more time for the long journey home.
