ROUGHYEDS are pleased to announce our prop Dom Newton has signed a new one-year deal ahead of next season.
Newton, who joined us from Underbank Rangers, made ten appearances in red and white colours last year and scored one try.
The 29-year-old spent three years in the Huddersfield Giants academy and also captained amateur club Newsome Panthers.
His try for us came after we were 12-0 down against Cornwall going into half-time and kick-started our comeback to win 32-12 in Penryn last season.
Dom said:
“At the back end of last year I found a bit of form, playing regularly and found my feet and it’s a good opportunity to play again next year and build from last year.”
He feels he has adapted to professional rugby league well and is looking to learn even more with us, adding:
“I was fine with the standard of League One. I don’t think the gap is massive between the top of the NCL and League One.
“But you have to be a lot more committed and there’s a lot more to it. You don’t just turn up and play which I’ve sort of been used to in the past.
“There’s little bits I picked up on in 2022 that I wouldn’t have if I wasn’t playing with a better standard of players against a better standard opposition
“Stu has brought me on from where I was and I think we’ll be looking to build on last year.
“It was a bit mixed last year but with the signings that we’ve made, I think everything looks positive.”
Head coach Stuart Littler, said:
“When he first came to us, Dom probably had his eyes opened with the intensity of training, but I thought he adapted really well and earned a jersey.
“At the back end of the year, he hit some form and was coming off the bench causing some havoc and changed some games for us.
“He’s someone I’m looking to keep working and developing with. He asks loads of questions, he wants to be better and he wants to have feedback.
“He’s someone we’re delighted to have on board.”
