MARTYN Ridyard believes Roughyeds need to cut out the errors as preparations turn to the Doncaster Challenge Cup game in two weeks time.
Speaking after the 40-22 victory over Wigan Warriors Academy at Ince Rose Bridge, club captain Ridyard believed there were positives and negatives on show.
Oldham’s completion rate was at 66 per cent in the first half, way off the standards the lads and head coach Stuart Littler set.
“I think we probably didn’t give them enough respect at some points in the first half but, at the same time, I think we disrespected ourselves and the way we can play.
“We coughed up play one errors, loose balls and that’s where we probably just need to work on ourselves a little bit more.
“If we play against Doncaster at 60 odd per cent, they’re a great team, they’ll put us to the sword. At the same time, it’s pre pre-season and that’s what we’re here for - to work on things.
“It was good how we reacted at half time. We all agreed where we needed to work on to get better and thankfully we showed a bit more in the second half.”
Some of Roughyeds younger players were given game time on Sunday including Ellis Keppel, George Hirst and Connor Carr and experienced campaigner Ridyard thought they fared well.
“It’s been some of the lads first hit out, but I think they held their own and did well. Some of them were unlucky to not get on against Rochdale, but it was a close game,” he said.
“They’re all learning each week and hopefully, if they get an opportunity, they can take it with both hands and bring something to the squad.”
Despite being 36, Ridyard shows no signs of slowing down — and wants to carry on learning and ‘getting better each week’.
“A lot of the Wigan lads are a lot fitter and faster than me, so I knew I had to play well to keep up with them. I know I’ve got the experience which can get you through, but the pace and athleticism of the younger lads these days can be a lot better.
“No matter how old I am, I’m still learning as well and I want to get better each week. No matter what Wigan team you play, they’re usually the best team in the country. They amp it with the best players from the amateur game,”
he added.
