CONFIRMATION that Roughyeds are putting on basic rugby league skills sessions at the well-known Mahdlo Youth Zone, is a classic case of ‘one thing leads to another’ on our burgeoning community programme at venues inside the borough and even further afield.
You may recall that in the run-up to Easter a club delegation visited Mahdlo to meet and greet everyone there, to exchange Easter greetings and to distribute Easter eggs to the young people.
Since then, the local Youth Zone’s Sports and Outdoors co-ordinator, George Ryder, has contacted our chief photographer David Murgatroyd to say that on the day of the Oldham RLFC Easter visit to Mahdlo a member of our party had indicated that he would like to do basic rugby league skill drills.
As a result, Samuel Doyle, a member of the Roughyeds’ backroom team, will lead six weekly one-hour sessions on Friday nights, demonstrating such things as how to throw a pass, how to catch a pass, how to catch a high ball etc, etc.
The six weekly sessions will cater for 12 to 19 year-olds.
Said Samuel:
“We are already up and running. It’s good for Mahdlo, for our club and for the town and I’m both thrilled and delighted that I can put something like this back into the community. If the young people enjoy it and it puts smiles on people’s faces that’s all I want to see.”
