WE are to have player-of-the-month awards, starting immediately, with the winner each month to be chosen by the coaches, based on match performances and commitment to training.
They will be sponsored by Rugby Oldham and named in honour of the late Brian Walker — a lifetime Roughyeds fan who was involved when Chris Hamilton and his three fellow directors re-formed the club in 1997 and who was also a founder member of Rugby Oldham, the Supporters’ Trust, in 2005. He was a member of the Trust’s board until his death in 2021.
The winner of each monthly award will receive £50, to be donated to the chosen player’s amateur club or to the charity of his choice.
There will also be an end-of-season award for the Brian Walker Trophy.
Monthly awards this summer will be presented as follows:
MAY — at Oldham v Hunslet, Saturday, June 3, kick-off 1pm.
JUNE — at Oldham v Workington , Sunday, July 2, kick-off 3pm
JULY/AUGUST — at Oldham v Midlands Hurricanes, Sunday, August 27,kick-off 3pm.

Its run by Joe Warburton on behalf of the Oldham Players’ Assn and its literally got the potential to become a whose who of local rugby league. Basically, its for anyone in the Oldham area who has red and white blood in his or her veins and is looking for a mid-week rugby gathering of like-minded sports fans to air their views, have a chat over a brew or a pint.
