FORMER Rochdale winger Cian Tyrer is training with Roughyeds on a trial basis.
A product of the Wigan youth academy, Tyrer has spent the last two seasons at Hornets where he scored 28 tries in 44 appearances.
His efforts in 2022, where bagged 18 tries in 22 appearances, earned him a nomination for the League 1 Young Player of the Year award.
The former Leigh Miners Rangers amateur is backing himself to impress newly-appointed head coach Sean Long and earn himself a contract for the 2024 season.
“I had an offer to stay with Rochdale as well as other clubs in the Championship and League One, but I was really keen to be a part of what Mike (Ford) is trying to achieve with the club,”
said the 22-year-old.
“I’m coming in on a trial basis and hopefully come the end of pre-season I will have earned a contract.
“I know most of the lads that are at Oldham, having played with them before, and I can’t wait to get back into the swing of things and start preparing for the season ahead.
“I would say I’m a hard worker with the amount of carries I produce and the runs and metres I make out of back-field carries.”
After progressing through the Wigan set-up, Salford-born Tyrer signed for Newcastle Thunder where he made four appearances in the championship.
Cian, Kieran’s cousin, names full-back as his favoured position but is equally as good on the wing and can operate in any position required.
He scored a try in Roughyeds’ most recent 24-20 victory over Hornets at the Crown Oil Arena at the end of August.
Tonight the club is holding a fans forum in the Broadway Suite at Boundary Park.
The free event is an opportunity for fans to pose questions of the board members, such as Bill Quinn and Mike Ford, as well as Sean Long and his coaching staff.
