Law Cup memories

FANS attending the Roughyeds’ forum at Boundary Park this Tuesday, November 7 (8pm start) will get a special treat in that a sparkling and professionally spruced up Law Cup trophy will be on view  and fans can take a picture on their phones with the person or persons of their choice together with the cup.

Explained former club chairman John Chadwick:

“The Law Cup is more than 100 years old. It’s a very prestigious trophy for Oldham and Rochdale Hornets. I retrieved it from a storeroom at Whitebank and took it to a jeweller’s shop in Blackpool to get it cleaned up because its ours until the next time and having it is something to be proud of. We need to shout from the roof tops that the Law Cup is currently in our possession and that, come the start of next season, we’ll be doing all we can at the Crown Oil Arena to hang on to it.

“In the meantime , we have a heaven-sent opportunity to show it off to our fans in  all its glory and that’s why it will be on show at Tuesday’s forum, maybe with the Oldham RL Heritage Trophy, which goes each year to the man of the match,”

writes ROGER HALSTEAD.

We have here a Law Cup history written by the club’s  official historian Michael Turner; an updated version written by Michael more recently; and pictures of the Law Cup itself, the Oldham squad that won it earlier this year and the Oldham team that won it in 1922.

The Law Cup is a massive part of our history and that’s why this prized possession will get the VIP treatment it deserves when we all meet up on Tuesday.

Given that our ambitious club is  now more than talk of the town, more like talk of the entire rugby league, we  expect a big turn-out in the Boundary Suite as fans want to share our excitement and our belief that Longy will be in charge of a very different club to the one we know and love now by the time his three-year contract expires at the end of the 2026 season. See you Tuesday!
