Rangers aim for big treble in Junior Finals

The youngsters of Saddleworth Rangers will be aiming for a trophy double tomorrow (Sunday) in the Oldham Amateur League’s continued Junior Cup Finals at Melrose, Fields New Road, Chadderton OL9 8NH and if they are successful in the under-14s and under-15s finals it will be a treble trophy triumph for Rangers, given that a team from the Pennine hills and valleys beat derby rivals Waterhead 28-6 in the under-12s final last Sunday.

The facilities at Melrose Playing Fields are in big demand right now by local youngsters, with Mike Ford, Joe Warburton and John Byram leading the RFLs Pathway Programme there last Saturday when under-15s and under-16s played teams from Leigh, one team wearing red and white replicas of the brand-new Oldham RLFC home kit for 2024 and the other one sporting the Roughyeds’ black and tangerine away kit.

“Considering where we were 18 months ago when we first started talking about the possibility of taking over at Oldham, and where we are today, I felt very proud to see those lads running out in Oldham kit. We’ve come a long way in a short time — and this is just the start,”

said the Oldham RLFC managing director, Mike Ford.

Mayfield beat Limehurst Lions last week in the under-13s final while this week’s cup finals tomorrow are Saddleworth v Oldham St Anne’s at 10am (under 14s) and Saddleworth v Mayfield at 11.30am (under-15s).

Admission to see the stars of tomorrow is £2.
