THANKS to the generosity of keen Oldham fan Tony Linney, an enthusiastic member of THE YEDS Supporters’ Group and a Roughyeds man through and through, the young players in the junior sections of six local community clubs are to be supplied with a set of training balls with which to practice the rudiments of the game.
Who knows, in years to come there may well be another Oldham boy hitting the sport’s heasdlines as a direct result of the community interest in these things as demonstrated by Tony and his beloved YEDS. writes ROGER HALSTEAD.
YEDS are committed to doing all they can to support all levels of rugby league in Oldham and this is a typical example of what the oeganisation, and its members , are more than happy to do. Well done Tony ! And well done YEDS ! Well done, too, to Dave Murgatroyd, for organising the distribution of the balls and to Roary, the Roughyeds’ popular lion mascot, for actually presenting the balls to Limehurst Lions, Saddleworth Rangers and Waterhead Warriors. The other three clubs will get theirs at a later date.
Roary also attended the Saddleworth Rangers under-eights awards night and presented their trophies. Rangers also presented 30 Selections Boxes to the YEDS Christmas appeal. John Davies and Sam Doyle accepted them on the YEDS behalf. A big thank-you to Sarah and Mick from Saddleworth for their help.
Then, on a different night, Roary went to the last training session this season for Waterhead under-8s and while he was there he presented the training balls donated by the YEDS supporters Group.
John Power, the ex-Oldham player, asked if Roary would pop along and say hello to the Waterhead youngsters and Roary was delighted to oblige. Well done, that lion ! And a big thanks to John for recognising Roary’s popularity and inviting him go Waterhead.
As the Roughyeds keep saying: We’re stronger together.
