Training session with Doncaster Knights

ROUGHYEDS pre-season training stepped up a level after a session with union club Doncaster Knights, last week.

Sean Long’s side are preparing to return to action as they face Keighley Cougars on Boxing Day in just five days’ time.

Taking advantage of the links between the two clubs – with them sharing the same strength and conditioning coach as well as being coached by Mike Ford’s son, Joe – the session was aimed at seeing what each club could learn from one another.

There was gym work, wrestling, several passing drills as well as various game based scenario training.

“There’s a lot of things that you can transfer from union to league and vice versa,” said Roughyeds boss Sean Long.

“I thought the Knights threw some good shape and we struggled to defend against them.

“Joe (Ford) came down to watch one of our sessions, we had a good chat about and bounced ideas off each other, so we asked if we could come up and train against their boys.

“In coaching, you are always learning and I think we picked up a few things that we can take away and learn from.”

For assistant boss Brendan Sheridan it was good to get a change of scenery after several rigorous pre-season sessions.

“It’s been a tough pre-season so far and the boys have worked really hard, and it was nice to change it up a little bit.” he said.

“Afterwards, the boys got together and spent some quality time with each other.

“It’s been 100mph and the boys have had to take a lot in and they’ve been working so hard.”
