Agoro approaching career milestone

WINGER Mo Agoro is set to make his 200th club appearance this weekend against Halifax in the 1895 Cup.

His career has gone full circle having returned to Oldham – the club he made his professional debut for.

Agoro, who came through the Leeds Rhinos set-up, was recommended to the club by then Head of Youth Barrie McDermott who made 24 appearances for Oldham during the early 90s.

Mo’s first appearance resulted in a forgettable 48-12 loss to North Wales Crusaders, but he shone having scored a try in his first game in front of the home fans – with whom he became a fan favourite – in a 26-10 victory over Rochdale.

He looks back on his first spell at the club fondly, despite both years at Oldham, 2013 and 2014, ending in play-off final defeat.

“We had two great years of consistent performances and at the time was coached by Scott Naylor who was a great coach who had really high standards,” he recalled.

“The second back-to-back defeat was heartbreaking because we’d gone unbeaten at home and lost out by one point to Hunslet in the final.”

Agoro played for Drighlington and Hunslet Warriors as an amateur, before he was picked up for Leeds Rhinos.

So far in his club career, he has made 59 appearances for Keighley (2020-23), 40 for Oldham (2013-2014, 2024-), 37 for Newcastle Thunder (2018-2019), 35 for Gloucestershire All Golds (2016-2017), 19 for Hunslet (2015-2016) 5 for Hemel Stags (2015, loan) and 4 for London Skolars (2019, loan).

He has an impressive try-scoring record having scored 127 tries in his 199 club appearances.

He names scoring his first try for Jamaica at the 2021 World Cup as the highlight of his career so far, as well as the various derbies he has been involved in with Oldham.

“It was against Lebanon – there was a lot of stuff in the background with it being the first World Cup Jamaica played in and it was a real moment to remember and a great day,” he said.

“In terms of moments in an Oldham shirt, the games against Rochdale were always highlights. There’s always a big build-up to them and the atmospheres are always great.”
