Opposition Focus Swinton Lions

It’s a return to Challenge Cup action this weekend as Oldham travel to Heywood Road to face Championship side Swinton. The game promises to be an entertaining one, taking into account both side’s good start to their respective seasons.

Coach

Pulling the strings for Swinton is experienced coach Alan Kilshaw. He began his coaching journey as part of the Warrington Wolves Development Department, including mentoring the England Youth and Academy from 2011 to 2013.

He then moved over to Australia to take up a role with Sarina Crocodiles and latterly the Mackay Cutters before returning to the UK where he replaced Ian Talbot as head coach of Rochdale Hornets.

Kilshaw left the Hornets in 2018, but returned to the game in 2021 with Yorkshire outfit Hunslet, spending two seasons at the South Leeds Stadium, before joining Swinton this year.

One to Watch

Recently dubbed the Mo Salah of rugby league, due to his appearance, winger Rhys Williams is certainly a danger that will be mentioned by Sean Long to his squad when they review the Swinton side during this week’s video analysis.

Williams comes with many seasons of Super League experience as well as blistering speed that will keep Oldham on their toes in defence.

Like Oldham’s Mo Agoro and Ben O’Keefe, he certainly likes an interception try.

Recent Form

Swinton have had an encouraging start to the season, winning both their 1895 Cup group games.

Their first came against League One North Wales where they gained a comfortable 40-12 victory, followed by a shock victory over Widnes Vikings.

Swinton then had a big win at home in the third round of the Challenge Cup against amateur side West Hull to set up this weekend’s clash.

Both clubs will be confident of getting the win and qualifying for the fifth round of the cup.

Previous Meetings

In the last five meetings, Swinton have certainly had the better of Oldham who have won just once to Swinton’s three. The other game being a 22-22 draw.

Oldham will be out to register their first win on the road at Swinton for the first time since 2016.
