Oldham 38 Dewsbury Rams 16

SCOTT Naylor praised his players’ tenacity, teamwork and total commitment after a resounding seven-try defeat of Dewsbury Rams.

It was Oldham’s first win in the Championship, at the third attempt, and the Roughyeds’ boss said the level of performance reached by his team was one which would raise the bar for the remainder of a long season.
“We’ve set the standard and we must not depart from it; not unless we take it even higher, which we will have to do at Featherstone next week,” said Naylor.
He went on: “We didn’t win because we played fantastic football or because we had a great kicking game or because of any other quality you care to name.
“We won because 17 Oldham players worked and worked and worked from start to finish. Individually and as a team they really wanted this. You somehow knew in the dressing room before the game that they were going to collect their first win. That this would be a massive team effort.
“We made some changes and I think they worked well for the team.  From 1 to 17 they all get a pat on the back from me.
“They’ll get a lot of confidence from this –a win players and backroom staff thoroughly deserve because they have worked desperately hard, going all the way back to the start of pre-season training last November.
“More recently, we have been working on things which we learned from the games against full-time opposition in London Broncos and Leigh Centurions and it was good to see those things being adopted and proving successful.”
Tries were scored by Gareth Owen (2), Danny Langtree (2), Tom Ashton, Michael Ward and Adam Clay, while Lewis Palfrey landed five goals from eight shots, one of them a penalty.
Team: Lepori; Clay, Ashton, Bibby, Holmes; Grimshaw, Palfrey; Joy, Owen, Spencer, Hope, Langtree, Thompson. Subs: Ward, Gee, Hughes, Crowley.
Attendance: 816; Referee: Joe Cobb
