OLDHAM have had permission from the RFL to make their big entrance into the Kingstone Press Championship wearing predominantly red jerseys with which to celebrate their trophy-winning feats last season
They will be worn once only — against London Broncos at Bower Fold on Sunday (3pm) — and then put up for auction.
After Sunday, Roughyeds will play in red and white hoops at home and in pink and grey hoops away, but the feeling at the club was that it would be appropriate for players and fans to remember where they had come from while setting out on their journey into the unknown.
Replicas of the red celebration jerseys, which recognise the Roughyeds’ League One trophy double last year, have been on sale for several weeks.
Said chairman Chris Hamilton: “It’s only a one-off, and we’ve had to get special dispensation from the RFL to do it.
“For our first game at Championship level we thought it would be nice to do something to remember what a fantastic season we enjoyed last year.
“We’ll auction off the shirts eventually and fans can bid for the shirt that was worn by their favourite player or players.”
Winger Adam Clay, Roughyeds top try scorer last year with 21, is fit to play after missing the Law Cup win with a groin injury.
Craig Briscoe is definitely out, with a knee injury picked up in the 22-0 win at Barrow, and Danny Grimshaw is doubtful.
The former Hunslet half-back, who has shown exciting form in the pre-season games, will be checked out later in the week,
Said coach Scott Naylor: “He was hit side on in the Rochdale game and he appears to have twisted his lower leg. He is sore from ankle to calf.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s big game, Naylor added: “It’s going to be tough for us because they’re a full-time team and they don’t have anything else to think about outside of rugby.
“I spoke to Andrew Henderson (Broncos boss) at Monday’s Championships launch and he’s really looking forward to having a squad he can call his own.
“He was appointed half-way through last season so he wasn’t dealing with his own team. He’s since shipped a few out and brought in some newcomers so it will be interesting to see how he goes.”
