WELL, we only went and did it ! Congrats to all concerned in our 20-18 win which secures our place in the Kingstone Press Championship next season.
“This is a massive achievement in terms of the club’s development moving forward,” said a delighted chairman Chris Hamilton.
In a hard-fought battle with a brave and gutsy Whitehaven side, we edged it by two points to spark exciting and emotional celebrations on the pitch as players summoned up energy from somewhere to dance and sing and go across to the fans to applaud them for their magnificent support throughout the season.
Said Scott, a proud-as-punch coach: “It’s an absolutely amazing result for our club.
“As coaches we can only do so much. It’s what the lads do on the field that counts in the end.
“I would like to thank every single player who has played for us this year — not just the 17 on the pitch today, but the players who didn’t play.
“It’s been a team effort and it doesn’t matter whether a player has appeared once or more than 30 times. If they’ve been on the field — and there are some no longer at the club — they get our sincere thanks.”
Haven got off to a flying start with a try by Ugo Perez inside four minutes, but Ed Chamberlain’s angled conversion hit the near post and bounced away.
Little did we know at that stage how significant that would be in the final analysis.
Converted tries by Phil Joy and Liam Thompson, goaled by Lewis Palfrey, gave us a 12-4 lead and then Lewis P and Chamberlain each added a penalty as we led 14-6 at half-time.
We stretched the lead to 20-6 early in the second half with an Adam Clay try which Palfrey converted brilliantly off the touchline.
But this merely signalled a magnificent fightback by the Cumbrians, who scored converted tries by Liam Carberry and James Newton to cut our lead to two points and give us a bit of a fright.
We managed to hang on — and then the celebrations began !
