CASTLEFORD Tigers have recalled Kieran Gill from his loan spell at Oldham and have named him in their 19-man squad for tomorrow’s (Thurs) televised Betfred Super League game at Huddersfield Giants.
Tigers have also pulled back Tom Holmes and Kevin Larroyer, who were loaned out on similar agreements to Batley Bulldogs and Bradford Bulls respectively.
All three are in the Tigers squad because Zak Hardaker, Luke Gale and Mike McMeeken are in Australia on England duty and Ben Roberts strained a groin during Saturday’s brilliant 54-4 hammering of Wigan Warriors.
Daryl Powell, Tigers head coach, told his club’s website: “This is a great opportunity for players who haven’t played much this year or who are coming into the squad to play for the first time. It challenges our squad depth to see where we are at.”
Gill (21) scored eight tries in 12 games for Roughyeds while on loan last season. He’s a contracted, full-time pro with his home-town club, who loan him out to Oldham so he can play at Championship level as part of his overall development.
He has played in most of the Roughyeds’ games again this year, either at centre or on the wing, highlighted by his brilliant, match-winning try against Bradford Bulls at Bower Fold last month.
He also scored in Sunday’s 28-24 win at Dewsbury, but Scott Naylor will have no trouble if he needs to find a replacement outside back at London Broncos on Sunday, given that Danny Grimshaw, on-loan Tuoyo Egodo and Jamel Chisholm didn’t play last time out.
London-born Egodo (20) was in the Broncos academy before accepting an offer to go full time with Castleford.
There’s also a doubt over Scott Turner, who was concussed at Dewsbury. He is going through the usual protocol which safeguards players with head injuries and he will be tested further at the end of the week.
“Apart from our long-term injury victims and Scott Turner, everyone else is fit and ready to go,” confirmed Naylor.
Steven Nield’s loan agreement with Gloucester All Golds has been extended for another month.
