Mighty effort and lots of positives

DESPITE a valiant effort and a determination to give of their best at all times, Roughyeds were beaten 32-14 by a strong Featherstone Rovers side at Bower Fold on Sunday.

The win would clinch a Rovers’ top-four finish and an appearance in the Middle 8s — a massive incentive.

However, we made them fight all the way with our very young side which included three loan players and two on dual reg — the maximum five.

With nine players out injured and Sammy Gee working off his one-match ban, the boys who came in did a tremendous job, just as they did the previous week when we beat Toulouse Olympique.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t pull it off this time, but even Jon Sharp, the Rovers coach, said afterwards that he couldn’t understand where we were in the table when we were so hard to break down.

Luke Adamson, our man of the match, also passed comment on the fact that we lived with Rovers for most of the game and we would have run them very close but for that ten-minute blip in the first half when we hardly saw the ball and they scored three tries.

We came back well from 16-0 down to trail 16-4 at half-time, Matty Wilkinson having scored a try in the corner when he used the short side from dummy-half to squeeze over the line.

We kept battling in the second half, but Rovers took the score out to 26-4 before we cut the deficit when Sadiq Adebiyi forced his way over from close range, on a flat pass from Kenny Hughes, to crown a tremendous game by the young Londoner.

Anthony Thackeray scored next for Rovers, but we kept going to the end and we were rewarded when Anderson made a thrust down the right and offloaded to Tyson, who crashed over to score our third try.
