Spencer's unfinished business at Oldham

DESPITE relegation and subsequent attention from other clubs Jack Spencer will be staying at Oldham to complete ‘unfinished business’.

One of the Roughyeds’ most experienced players, he is looking forward to the challenge of League 1 in what will be his third season at Oldham.

By signing a new one-year deal and buying into the club’s all-out effort to regain Championship status at the first attempt, he has come up with a statement of intent regarding personal and team goals, said Roughyeds chairman Chris Hamilton.

He added: “We are absolutely delighted Jack is staying with us despite the attention of other clubs.

“He is an experienced member of the squad whose qualities should really stand out in League 1.”

Son of the club’s former assistant boss Lee Spencer, Jack is comfortable wherever he plays in the pack — front row, second row or loose.

Before flying off to Jamaica on holiday, he spoke of recharging batteries in readiness for a good pre-season and then the ‘big job’ of doing enough in League 1 to make a quick return to the Championship.

“We let ourselves down last year,” added the former Barrow and Halifax man. “With the squad we had we should never have got ourselves into that position.

“It’s good to see so many of the lads re-signing and I think a big factor for a lot of us is the desire to put right the wrongs of 2017.

“There’s a lot of unfinished business to be done and that’s how most of the lads are looking at it.

“We’re a tight group. At the end of a season, and particularly when you’ve been relegated, you inevitably get other clubs sniffing about and wondering what’s happening, but I was never going anywhere.

“I’ve loved my two years at Oldham and I’m looking forward to the challenge of year three and the battle to get us back where we belong.”

Determined to build the strongest squad they can within a limited budget, Roughyeds expect to announce more signings in the next few days, including a third new boy to add to Luke Nelmes and Paul Crook.
