Great start to pre-season campaign

ROUGHYEDS got their pre-season programme off to an impressive start with a 24-10 win against Championship outfit Barrow Raiders at a cold, wet Craven Park.

The home side started and finished the scoring, but in the hour in-between Scott Naylor’s enthusiastic new-look squad dominated proceedings and scored five unanswered tries by Ben Calland, Zack McComb (2), Scott Law and Matty Wilkinson, with Dave Hewitt converting two of them.

The visitors led 24-4 until a few minutes from the end when a speculative high kick into a swirling wind bounced kindly for Barrow to score their second try.

Teamwork was Oldham’s strength, on defence and attack, but the visitors had stand-out players in full-back Richie Hawkyard, prop Scott Law and two-try centre Zack McComb.

“To say we had six or seven new lads on debut we looked structured, ‘together’ and very much a team,”

said a delighted Naylor.

Attendance: 1, 119.
