Aiming for second spot — and a thriller at the Recre

OLDHAM will go second in Betfred League 1 to Whitehaven if they beat bottom-of-the-table West Wales Raiders at the Vestacare Stadium today.

And what a cracking table-topping clash that would then make it at the Recreation Ground next Sunday when ‘Haven host the Roughyeds for the right to be on top of the world.

For Scott’s men to be in with a shout of that lofty position today they needed London Skolars to inflict a third loss in a row yesterday on the Cumbrians, but it wasn’t to be, ‘Haven winning 28-6 in North London.

While that was going on, Doncaster were winning 54-10 at Coventry, leaving six clubs to battle it out today — OLDHAM v West Wales Raiders, North Wales Crusaders v Keighley Cougars and Newcastle Thunder v Workington Town.

Second-placed Hunslet have the best for-and-against record with 188 but Oldham should surpass that today against a Raiders side that has conceded 633 points at an average of 52 points a game.

All under-16s go free today on a day when parents can take their children to watch live semi-pro rugby league and players of the calibre of Danny Langtree and Danny Bridge with no cost whatsoever.

Dave Hewitt, the Oldham scrum-half who started his career at St Helens, as did ‘Langers’, will be playing his 100th senior game.
