One of our player focuses this week is Anthony Bowman, who joined Oldham this season but is no stranger to the Roughyeds, having played for us on loan from Halifax in 2013.
He has also played for Swinton alongside Ritchie Hawkyard but, more recently, he played for Rockingham Sharks in Western Australia.
He has been playing rugby since he was aged about six and at the age of 14 he had a choice to play football or rugby. He chose rugby and let his ‘unbelievable football skills” go to waste.
Fast forward to a few months ago and Anthony chose to sign for Oldham because he thought it would give him a great chance to win a league.
His rugby league hero is ex-Wigan and Great Britain star Andy Farrell and the best player he has played against is St Helens hooker James Roby. They played against each in other in a Halifax v St Helens friendly.
Outside the rugby world, Anthony was a school shot-putt champion in year 7 and his hero was Manchester United legend George Best.
He describes himself as the best-looker in the squad and adds: “We’ve got people like Scott Law in there too but I must be in the top three !”,
To quote himself, the three words that best describe him are: “The Committed One”.
He said he would take Emmerson Whittel to a desert island because:
“If a lack of food didn’t kill me, talking to Emmy for two weeks certainly would !”.
His thoughts on the season so far?
“Very patchy. Good thing is we are third in the league and we can still go up another two or three gears. I believe we will finish top of the pile if we can start putting 80-minute performance together.’
