Our Wembley trip latest — and places still available

FANS who are booked on the Roughyeds’ trip to Wembley on August 24 are reminded that balances on payments are due before the end of this month.

Some who are going with us on this exciting, value-for-money trip have either paid up front or have started to pay balances that will soon be due.

We are currently in the process of finalising departure times etc and we’ll be in touch when balances are paid.

The trip is a never-to-be-forgotten opportunity to walk on hallowed turf in the footsteps of some of English sport’s all-time greats.

It’s one thing to watch a Wembley final from the comfort of a best-seat viewpoint, courtesy of Club Wembley; it’s something very different to visit the bowels of our iconic national stadium; to soak up the pre-game atmosphere behind the scenes; and then to join the big Wembley parade around the pitch perimeter, looking out for friends and neighbours as you pass by.

Last year, as we proudly showed our allegiance behind the Oldham flag, we heard a chant of “Oldham, Oldham” from high up in the assembled crowd and we looked up to see Kyran Johnson waving frantically to us as we strolled by.

These were memories that won’t be forgotten in a hurry by those who joined us last year on the Roughyeds’ trip and, during the journey down to Wembley, were involved in a draw to see who would have the honour and privilege of carrying the Oldham flag.

This year’s trip is on Saturday, August 24,when we will see two games for the price of one — the Coral Challenge Cup final which kicks off at 3pm and then the inaugural 1895 Cup final, which starts at 5.30pm.

It promises to be a fantastic day out for all rugby league fans — and they can take the pressure and stress out of the trip by coming with us, enjoying the company of fellow Oldham supporters and letting others battle against motorway traffic or worry about the cost of parking your vehicle at or close-to Wembley.

For £65 you get executive coach travel, a Club Wembley seat, an invitation to join in the big Wembley parade and the opportunity to spend a memorable day in the company of fellow Roughyeds supporters.

You will also be supporting and helping YOUR Oldham club because there are still a few seats remaining on the coach and, for obvious reasons, we don’t want to be travelling light if we can possibly avoid it.

To book online go to the roughyeds payments site or call the club on 07904 898 177, preferably between 10am and 3pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Please note that if you are booking ‘over the counter’ between the above times you will need to pay by cash or cheque only.

Anne Kearns, a member of the club’s management team, said:

“We had a brilliant trip last year, as anyone who went on it will testify.

“We’ve only a few seats left but the more we can fill the better it is for the club, especially if we can display the ‘sold out’ notice.

“On behalf of the club I would urge fans who might be thinking about it to take the plunge . . . you won’t be disappointed.

“As part of the RFL we are doing our bit to ensure that the sport’s biggest day is a huge success. We have a responsibility to our governing body to do our best and that’s where you come in because we can’t do it without you.

“Rugby League needs a big presence st Wembley on August 24 and we intend to play our part.”

Club Cash

AS you all know from your own experiences these are tough times for everybody, but we believe you will agree that OLDHAM RLFC is taking massive inspiration from the fabulous NHS and other key workers in tackling Covid head-on, while looking forward positively to the 2021 season and better times ahead thanks to the outstanding work now being done to get people vaccinated as quickly as possible.

Nevertheless, we have to face facts and be realistic enough to accept that the club urgently needs every pound that is currently coming in from whatever source. One of those sources is our Club Cash lottery and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who support us on this. A lot of you who used to pay our collectors on the doorstep have responded to our suggestions on how to pay by different methods and we are extremely grateful for that. Thanks again. You will never know how much difference your contributions make.

Alas, our income from the lottery has dropped by more than 50 per cent over the course of the pandemic and that would be a huge blow financially at any time let alone a time of unprecedented hardship because of the pandemic. It really is a situation we seriously need to address.

With that in mind the prize fund for the duration of the latest national lockdown will be temporarily reduced from February 10.

You will still be able to win a £1,000 first prize, plus £100, £50, £25 and ten £10 prizes every week, while continuing to provide vital support for the club and it will only cost you £1 a week. You can’t get a decent coffee for that, but the difference it makes to the club when multiplied a few times over and then multiplied again by 52 – the number of weeks in the financial year – is of major significance.

If you can help us at all — for £1 a week — it would be hugely appreciated by everyone with Oldham RL Club at heart. The prize structure still represents good value for money for an outlay of £1.

To those who are already members and help us accordingly, we very much hope to retain your support at this extremely difficult time.

Should you wish to play but don’t, due to the pausing of cash collection rounds, we have other options available, which you can discuss with our lottery administrator, John McAndrew on 07980129541 or from the club on 07904 898177.

Alternatively, you can send an email to: mcandrewj@aol.com or to: enquiries@roughyeds.co.uk

The prize fund will be increased back to previous levels as soon as latest lockdowns are released. Please watch our website and social media platforms for further announcements.

Finally, if you want more information about the lottery or you wish to discuss your membership please contact one of the numbers given above.

A huge thank-you to you all.
