Bower Fold beckons for Sunday showdown

THE local weather forecast is good and we’ve only one home game in July so why not visit Bower Fold today and get behind the Roughyeds lads, who need all the support they can get right now as they strive for their first win in seven Betfred Championship games.

Today’s ‘must win’ home game against Dewsbury Rams, which starts at 3pm, takes us to the half-way point in the season and we’ve only five more home games left after today against Bradford Bulls (July 11),  London Broncos (August 1), Toulouse Olympique (August 22), Featherstone Rovers (August 29) and Newcastle Thunder (Sept 12).

The game today should be a cracker with both teams in need of the league points, Dewsbury having dropped into the bottom four with only one win in their last seven outings.

Historically, we’ve had difficulty overcoming the Rams, who have won eight of the last ten meetings, but we firmly believe this is the day we are going to make amends for recent losses; play something like we did when beating Swinton Lions and Halifax Panthers at Bower Fold earlier in the season; and get the win we so badly need.

Said head coach Matt Diskin:

“If we control the ball, ensuring our individual skill is good, we will have a good chance against any team in the league.”

Our last win against the Rams was 28-24 at the Tetley’s Stadium in 2017.

The last time we played them was in the last game of the Covid-curtailed 2020 season when Rams won 24-6 at Bower Fold with a side that included Martyn Reilly and Luke Nelmes in the front-row.

Props for us that day were Phil Joy and Jimmy Beckett, who has this week signed for Rams on loan . He has gone straight into their 21-man squad and looks certain to play.

It has all the makings of being a terrific game.
