More condolences for Kevin Flanagan

MORE condolences for Kevin Flanagan’s wife, Diane — one of them from the other side of the world — have been received by the club.

Former players Brian Anglin, who has lived Down Under for many years, and Johnnie Paterson, Yorkshire based, have sent their sincere condolences, having been told of Kevin’s death by centre Ian Radcliffe, who lives in Hertfordshire.

It was standing-room only at the Crematorium, where the service was led by Independent Celebrant David Whaley, former editor of the long-gone Oldham Evening Chronicle.

Roughyeds and Rochdale Hornets were well represented, as were Rugby Oldham, the Oldham RL Heritage Trust, and the Ex-Players’ Associations of both clubs.

There was another large turn-out the following day for the funeral at Holy Trinity, Dobcross, of lifelong Oldham fan Brian Walker, who was on the board at Rugby Oldham (the Supporters’ Trust) and also a trustee of the Oldham RL Heritage Trust.

Ian Wilson, secretary of Rugby Oldham, and Roger Halstead, an Oldham Evening Chronicle journalist with special responsibilities for Oldham RLFC from 1964 to his retirement in 2005, did the eulogies.

As reported previously, both Kevin and Brian will be sorely missed by Oldham RLFC — as, indeed, they will be by many others — and our most sincere of condolences go to their families and friends at this sad time.

  • HOOKER Matty Wilkinson, who broke a leg in pre-season training and didn’t play at all in 2021, has chosen to sign for Swinton Lions, thus following young centre Max Roberts.
