Mike Turner of the Oldham RL Heritage Trust, then a young fan, remembers what Geoff Sims did in the 1964 quarter-final win over Hunslet as much as the try he scored in the controversial first semi-final replay against Hull KR, which was abandoned in extra time because of bad light with Oldham 17-14 in front. Rovers won the second replay at Fartown 12-2
He said:
“One thing I particularly remember about Geoff is that, prior to his heroics in the first replay of the semi-final against Hull KR in 1964, it was Geoff who secured our place in the last four.
“On an absolute quagmire of a pitch at Parkside, Hunslet in the quarter-final Geoff demonstrated a superb piece of skill in kicking ahead and winning the race to touchdown.
“It was the turning point of the match that Oldham went on to win 7 - 5 and a brave thing to do in those days of unlimited possession (no tackle count).”
