Congratulations

THE heartiest congratulations from all at Oldham RLFC are extended to Waterhead Warriors, who won two cups in six days – the BARLA National Cup, followed by the Standard Cup.

We have invited them to bring both trophies to the Roughyeds’ Betfred League One home game against new club Cornwall at the Vestacare Stadium on Sunday (3pm kick-off) and to do a lap of honour at half-time.

They beat Sharlston Rovers, of the Yorkshire Men’s League, in the National Cup Final at Featherstone after knocking out Cockermouth, Normanton Knights, Orrell St James and Myton Warriors en route to the Final.

A few days later, they beat Saddleworth Rangers 16-6 in the Oldham Amateur League’s Standard Cup Final at Manor Park, watched by a large crowd.

A Charlie McManus penalty gave Rangers a 2-0 interval lead, but Waterhead tool control in the second half to score tries by Ciaran Dean, Jenson Hamilton and James Perks and two goals by Kegan Brennan.

Billy England scored Saddleworth’s only try near the end.

Dale Lowe, of Waterhead, won the Ben Powell Trophy as man of the match.

The boys from Peach Road, who play in National Conference division three, now have their sights on a third trophy this year – their league championship.

We would love to see them, and their two pieces of silverware, at the Vestacare Stadium on Sunday. The whole town can be proud of them, so let’s make the most of their achievements.
