Letter from a new fan

WE have received the following email from the Roughyeds’ newest long-distance fan. Ian Price drove all the way from Cannock in Staffordshire to give his step-daughter Elise her first taste of rugby league at last Sunday’s game against West Wales Raiders at the Vestacare Stadium.

Here is the email he sent us on returning home:

What a fantastic day we had today. I know people are quick to complain when things don’t go well but I have to do the opposite here.

The welcome my step daughter Elise and I received today was fantastic from the moment we walked in about half one till the moment we left just about quarter past five.

The male member of staff whose name I sadly didn’t get was exceptional. He greeted her as we made our way pitch-side, chatted to her about it being her first game and said he would send Roary to see her, which he promptly did. She got a signed photo of Roary who posed with her and came back to give her a chocolate egg later too.

During our conversation we spoke about my daughter Rosa (her half sister) who will join us at a game in a year or two (she is currently two and a half and would be more trouble than all 34 players combined!). At the mention of this, another signed Roary photo and another chocolate egg were provided along with two wristbands.

Elise felt like royalty and cheered every try. She doesn’t understand all the rules but was chuffed to bits with her front row seat and is adamant she will be back this season, and she got a pretty good grasp of what was going on well before the end.

We live nearly two hours away in Cannock, Staffs so coming regularly is difficult but you should be so proud of the welcome your club provides.

I haven’t even mentioned the lady behind the bar who served her a couple of lemonades, popped them in a glass with a straw at half time and post match and took the time on both occasions to ask how her day had been and if she was enjoying herself.

Elise wore her hat and scarf with pride today and by quarter past five, left the ground referring to Oldham as “we”.

We will be back this summer. We will be back in future seasons as a family of four once the youngest is a bit older because the environment that you, your staff and players provide is one I am more than happy to bring the girls to.

Well done and thank you again and no, we know you won’t be able to provide us with 100 points every time we come.

Yours sincerely

Ian and Elise

(And Rosa, for her gifts, too)
