Gareth Owen here to support us

HE doesn’t play for us any more, but you can’t take Roughyeds out of the born-and-bred local lad Gareth Owen, who was at the Vestacare Stadium when we played North Wales Crusaders to support us with his pals.

Freelance photographer Gareth Lyons, who lives in Swinton, was taking pictures at the game for League Express and was passing the group when one of them asked him to take an image of the group with the former Salford Red Devils star and Oldham captain.

“Leading Oldham out as captain for the first time was one of the proudest days of my life,”

said Owen

“and it’s still a pleasure to come back to the Vestacare Stadium and give the lads a cheer.”

Owen plays for Waterhead now.

Roughyeds, who can still mathematically get into the Betfred League One play-offs, depending on Hunslet’s results as well as our own, won at Midlands Hurricanes on Sunday to complete a league double.

We are back at the Vestacare next Sunday, August 14, for the visit of London Skolars, while Hunslet go to runaway league leaders Keighley Cougars, who have won each of their 16 games to date.

May we take this opportunity of saying ‘hello’ to Gaz and his mates and expressing the view that we would love to see him and his pals at the Vestacare Stadium again this coming Sunday.

Indeed, we hope as many fans as possible make a special effort to come on Sunday, given that we have only TWO home games left out of a possible TEN and the money those home games generate have to last us for a full year.
