Riddy closes in on 2500 points

WITH at least three more games to play this season – the final number depends on whether we make the play-offs – our hugely-experienced captain, stand-off, goalkicker and master craftsman Martyn Ridyard needs only 17 more points to reach the magnificent total of 2,500 in his long career.

His current total of 2,483 comprises of 137 for Oldham this season; 131 for Swinton Lions last season; 1 for Rochdale Hornets while on loan; 2,008 for Leigh Centurions; 150 for Featherstone Rovers and 56 for Huddersfield Giants.

The figures above cover ALL competitive games in Cup, League, play-offs etc, but those given in League Express relate to league games only, hence the slight discrepancy between those given above and the figures in the trade press,

For instance, League Express gives Ridyard’s goals tally this year as 64, but that doesn’t include the two he kicked in the Challenge Cup, hence the difference in his overall points tally between the one given above and the 133 given elsewhere.

In the league alone, Riddy currently sits in fifth place for goals with 64 behind Swinton’s Dan Abram with 114, Keighley’s Jack Miller with 110, Tommy Johnson of North Wales Crusaders with 95 and Doncaster’s Connor Robinson with 67.

The first of the three regular-season games Riddy has in order to reach his 2,500 career points milestone this season will be against Cornwall in Penryn on Sunday, kick-off 1pm.

The oldest RU club in Cornwall is home to the newest RL club and that’s where the game will take place — The Memorial Ground, Kernick Road, Penryn, TR10 8NT.

For detailed directions visit the Cornwall RLFC website to find all the information you need.

Please be aware of the 1pm kick-off, brought forward from 3pm to give players and fans more time to face the long journey home and to arrive back in reasonable time for work on Monday morning.

The game will be over, of course, before our play-off rivals Hunslet take the field at Swinton Lions, so that’s another reason, apart from the obvious, why we need to produce another 80-minute performance like the one that gave us a 60-6 win against London Skolars last time out.

Said coach Stu Littler:

”I was proud of the boys for what they achieved, and how they played for 80 minutes, in that heat.

”The focus this week is entirely on Cornwall. An important feature of our preparation will be how we manage the differences to routine — a short, sharp session on Saturday morning; the long journey afterwards; the pre-game overnight stay; the early start which will mean we have to be at the ground by about 11.15am.

”I know it’s an old cliche, but we really do concentrate on one game at a time.

”We only play one game at a time; we can only prepare for one game at a time; and we can’t control what anybody else does. As I say, there is only one thing on our minds this week and that’s the Cornwall game."
