Great night at players’ dinner

More than 160 rugby league enthusiasts attended the annual Players’ Association’s dinner at the St Herbert’s parish room on Broadway.

It was a great night, highlighted by the legendary Paul Sculthorpe’s stories from his glittering career and his early days at Waterhead ARLFC – the local community club to which, he said, he owed a great deal.

Another highlight was the distribution of Oldham RLFC heritage certificates to Steve Whitmore, Mick Coombes, Ian Sanderson, Steve Littler, Ian Ogden, Wally Jones, Mark Fairbank, Jimmy Hornby and Graham Starkey, who had two spells at the club and three titles – player-coach, coach, manager.

Also, the late Lyn Morgan’s certificate was received by his son Yan.

Roughyeds were represented by chairman Chris Hamilton, a top-table guest in recognition of his 25 years at the club’s helm; club media manager Roger Halstead; Club Cash lottery administrator John McAndrew and his wife Lynda; and long-time club sponsors and backers, Shirley and Keith Mullaney.

Our picture shows Graham Starkey receiving his certificate from chief guest Paul Sculthorpe.
