ROUGHYEDS are proud and pleased to confirm that Kian Morgan, our ‘Rising Star’, will be with us again in 2023, having signed a new one-year contract.
The versatile and highly-skilled utility back is a proud Yorkshire lad, but Oldham now holds a special niche in his rugby body after his experiences here over the past 12 months.
“I love it at Oldham,” he said. “Its just like being part of a big family.”
The 21-year-old full-back, centre, wing or stand-off, who played brilliantly at full-back in late season after the decision was taken to switch Owen Restall to the wing, becomes the fourth member of last season’s squad to keep the faith at Oldham.
He’s in good company with Emmerson Whittel, Joe Hartley and Sean Slater.
Morgan, who has previously played at Halifax and Castleford Tigers, showed his versatility and his finishing power last season — his first at Oldham — when he played in four different positions — wing, centre, stand-off and full-back — and scored 11 tries in 15 games.
He added:
“I prefer full-back. That’s where I felt most comfortable and it’s not surprising given that I’ve played there all my career.
“Having said that, I’m happy to play anywhere to get into the side.”
Morgan, whom fans voted as their Player Of The Year, went on:
“I didn’t have much of a pre-season last year because of injury. I did a lot of my early training on my own and that’s not the same as training with the team.
“I still have more to offer, I was happy with how I played last season, but I feel I’ve still to hit my best. I can’t wait for the start of training again in the hope that I’ll have a bit more luck than I had this time last year.”
Head coach Stu Littler said:
“We have high hopes of Kian. He has a very high skill set and his attitude is second to none. Shez and I are delighted he has re-signed and delighted that we are playing a part in his development.”
