ROUGHYEDS are delighted to announce the capture of George Hirst on a one-year deal ahead of the 2023 Betfred League One season.
George follows in the footsteps of Jordan Paga and Kian Morgan, two players he knows well from his time playing at community club Almondbury Spartans who are coached by Kian’s dad, Craig.
He started off playing for Dewsbury Moor at under-9s level and stayed with them up until under-18s, barring a two-year spell in-between at Dewsbury Celtic.
After lockdown, George wanted a change so he went to Almondbury and, in his words, “never looked back.”
Batley-born George has played numerous positions with his primary ones being centre or second-row.
He also has four years experience playing on the wings, and recently he’s even been playing prop for Leeds Beckett University.
On making the step-up to League One, George said:
“I’m definitely ready and I’ve played in the England Community Lions under-19s squad against Scotland, Wales and Australia.
“I’ve known Jordan and Kian since college, so I thought coming to Oldham would be a good option.”
Roughyeds head coach Stuart Littler said:
“He’s a younger player, coming to us for an opportunity and a chance to develop and put his name forward in the professional game.
“He’s had a couple of opportunities previously and been involved in the youth set-ups of a few Super League clubs, but it’s not quite worked out for him.
“He’s going to come and compete hard to, first of all, get into our 17 and then to nail a position moving forward
“He’s willing to come on board and put his best foot forward, so we are looking forward to seeing his development and playing our part within that development.
“He’s a tall, rangy strapping lad and has some pace about him so we’re excited about his prospects."
