Not the finished article – Littler

ROUGHYEDS boss Stuart Littler believes there is still more to come from his side after they defeated London Skolars 62-14.

In the 30 degree baking heat, at the New River Stadium, Oldham swept away London Skolars with a decisive victory.

Oldham hit the 400 point mark for the season as Sean Slater scored their eleventh try on the hooter but Littler was left wanting more.

“It’s a mixed bag really,” he said. “We looked for a big start – which I think we got – we scored a couple of tries, had some disallowed and we started reasonably well.

“But then, we invited some pressure on ourselves, again, and I just think we need to be a bit more ruthless, as a group.

“Someone will miss a tackle and someone will give a penalty away, we will make errors at certain points, but it’s about how we react to that and how we can be better as a group.

“Nobody at this club thinks we’re the finished article. We train as hard as we can and we’ve got lads from 18 to 22 chomping at the bit to play, as well, and that is a position we want to be in to take us to where we need to go.”

Littler also revealed the decision to take off club captain Martyn Ridyard towards the end of the game, was precautionary.

Ridyard’s kicks have been pivotal for Roughyeds this year and, towards the end of the game, he handed over the goal-scoring duties to Pat Ah Van before he went off a while later and didn’t return.

“Martyn is a big game player for us, and we’ve got a couple of those coming up, so taking him off at the back end of the game was just a precaution,” he said.

The Roughyeds boss also paid tribute to Luke Nelmes who scored a try on his 100th career appearance.

“We’re making memories all the time, and we wanted this game to be a special moment for Nelmesey.

“He was our best forward with the way he started the game – he got us up the field and was doing double hit ups in sets of six to really put us on the front foot.” he added.
