Roughyeds bag proven try scorer

ROUGHYEDS are delighted to announce the signing of renowned try scorer Nick Rawsthorne, on a deal until the end of the season.

The 27-year-old can play across a number of positions including wing and centre as well as full-back and is well-known for being a relentless try scorer, in recent years.

Proven at Championship level, he joins Oldham from Halifax Panthers – the club he started out at – where he scored nine tries in 18 appearances in two stints for his hometown club.

His most notable period was playing for Toronto Wolfpack where he scored 27 tries in 34 appearances in the second division, and helped the Canadian club win promotion to Super League in 2019.

“There were a few Championship clubs that tried to sign me, but after weighing up my options Oldham was the perfect fit,”

said Rawsthorne

“They’re pushing for promotion and hoping to kick on in the next few years and I’m raring to go and looking forward to it.

“I’m hard-working and I like to get quick play-the-balls and do all the harder graft that some don’t want to do, but I like that part of the game.

“Scoring tries is nice, I can score a few of them, but I prefer doing the hard work out of yardage.

“Stu (Littler) likes to play quite an expansive brand of rugby and that suits me down to a tee – him being the coach was another reason for signing.”

His impressive run at Toronto was rewarded with a move to Super League club Hull KR, where he made six appearances.

Since making his professional debut in 2016, the 6ft 1in Yorkshireman has made 82 appearances and scored 51 tries.

“He’s a big, athletic boy and takes some handling in carries, and is good defensively,”

said head coach Stuart Littler.

“He will get us on the front foot coming out of yardage, but he’s also a prolific try scorer.

“He’s scored tries wherever he’s been – he’s experienced, played at higher levels and is an educated guy.

“Not only that, he is a well-rounded person as well and he will fit nicely into the culture that we’re trying to build here.

“He’s coming for an opportunity and will be challenging for both the wing and centre positions, so it gives us a bit of balance to the squad in an area where it is needed after we lost Calvin earlier in the year.”

Rawsthorne goes straight into contention to feature in Sunday’s game against Doncaster, 3pm kick off.

It is a not to be missed clash with both sides battling it out to chase down Dewsbury Rams who have yet to slip up.

Admission prices have been slashed to just £10 for both veterans and fathers to celebrate Fathers Day and Armed Forces Week.

Military personnel, both past and present, and anybody who brings their father to the game will get in at the Vestacare Stadium for the discounted price.

The club is also offering the same reduction to the parents of any child who wears a rugby shirt of any colour to the game.

Pay on the day is available at the cash only turnstiles, or alternatively visit our ticketing page to buy them now.
