Oldham Rugby League Club’s crucial home game against Workington Town in the Betfred League One play-off race was postponed yesterday because the Cumbrians’ team coach couldn’t get to Oldham in time because of a major accident on the M6 near Preston.
Initially, Oldham expected a delayed kick-off, but due to local agreements about the use of the Vestacare Stadium at weekends the latest they could kick-off was 6.15pm and when Workington’s expected time of arrival passed beyond that deadline the decision was taken to call it off.
Said Oldham’s managing director Mike Ford:
“The ground can’t be used after 8pm on a weekend. I was in constant dialogue with both Workington and the RFL and we all took the decision to cancel when Workington’s eta passed our 6.15pm deadline. As it turned out, they wouldn’t have got here before 7pm. There is no information yet on a new date.”
Hunslet’s 28-8 win against Doncaster takes the men from South Leeds above Oldham into third place, but fourth-placed Oldham have three more points than fifth-placed Workington, who have a game in hand.
