Cornwall setback as Oldham game draws closer

WITHOUT touching a ball or making a tackle, Cornwall suffered a setback today, relative to their position in Betfred League One, when Midlands Hurricanes won 38-18 at London Skolars to go above Oldham’s opponents tomorrow on points difference.

Cornwall and Hurricanes have each won four games now, but Cornwall drop to next-bottom, although they have two games in hand on the Midlands outfit.

If Oldham were to win tomorrow and Workington Town were to lose at top-of-the-table Dewsbury Rams, Mike Ford’s men would go back to fourth, writes ROGER HALSTEAD.

Tomorrow’s games: Cornwall v OLDHAM (1pm kick-off); Dewsbury Rams v Workington Town; North Wales Crusaders v Doncaster; Rochdale Hornets v Hunslet.

Rams will be champions and go up automatically if they win tomorrow, but with only five points separating Hunslet, Doncaster, Workington Town and Oldham, in that order, and with several regular-season games still to be played, it’s anyone’s guess how they will finish and, therefore, which club will get the best chance of winning promotion as play-off winners.

Oldham’s interim head coach Mike Ford has the Aussie-type five-club play-off formula up on the wall of his garage at his Diggle home, but before the leading teams in League One even get to the knock-out play-offs they have several regular-season games to get through.

In Oldham’s case that’s Workington and Midlands Hurricanes at home and Cornwall and derby rivals Rochdale Hornets away. The goal, obviously, is to win all four.

It all starts 350 miles away tomorrow in Ford’s first game in direct charge and with most Oldham fans at home in Oldham, clutching their smartphones and waiting for updates.

No pressure there then!
