WE don’t normally use anything about England RU on this website, but how can we not laud their performance in beating Argentina 27-10 with all 27 points coming from the boot of Oldham-born George Ford, who won the man-of-the-match award in Marseille with six penalties and three drop goals.
It was the Sale Sharks player’s record points haul for England.
He said afterwards:
“Drop goals were always part of our plan. We went a man down early on, but the boys up front were incredible. It’s never about one man. We are a tight-knit group. We have had a lot to deal with this last ten days and this is only the start — game one.”
The win was all the more impressive because England’s Tom Curry was sent off in the first few minutes.
Ford played rugby league as a boy at Waterhead and he is the middle son of Mike Ford, the former Oldham RLFC player and ex-coach in Union who is now back living in Saddleworth and is the Roughyeds’ managing director as well as interim head coach.
