OLDHAM RLFC have added winger/full-back Jack Johnson to their ranks on a two-year deal, as Roughyeds’ squad-building continues.
Signing from Newcastle Thunder, Johnson becomes the club’s fourth new addition since the conclusion of the recent League One campaign.
Audenshaw-born Johnson is capable of operating at full-back and on the wing, having had considerable experience playing in both positions during his career.
“There’s a big buzz around the club at the moment, and it seemed like a really good fit for me,” said Johnson on signing for the club.
“I bring a lot of enthusiasm, effort and I feel finishing is a good strength of mine. I’ve had some really good coaches throughout my playing career, so I’d like to say I’m experienced now.
“After speaking to Mike (Ford) and hearing the vision he has for the club, I was very excited. There’s a lot of ambition and some good people involved in the club, so it made my decision pretty easy.
“I had a look around Boundary Park and it’s probably as good as, if not better than, some Super League grounds. It’s our job, as players, to match those ambitions and translate them onto the field now.”
He started out playing for amateur club Saddleworth Rangers, before being picked up by Super League Warrington Wolves.
The 27-year-old made his first team debut for the Wire in a 46-16 victory over Hull FC during the Super 8s in 2015.
Johnson went on to make a further 17 appearances for Wolves and scored seven tries during his four years at the Halliwell Jones.
He moved to Featherstone and, latterly, Widnes Vikings before signing for Thunder, where he has played – and been a key player – for the last three seasons.
During his time in the North East, Johnson made 51 appearances and touched down on an impressive 30 occasions.
Johnson’s arrival takes the current squad up to 11 with further signings to be made in the coming days.
