RIP Roger Norris, former club director

THE sincere condolences of chairman Bill Quinn, managing director Mike Ford, former chairman John Chadwick and everyone at Oldham RLFC is extended to Patricia, Amanda and all the family of former club director and police chief Roger Norris, who has died in the Royal Oldham Hospital after a long illness, aged 80.

A lifelong fan of the club, police superintendent Norris joined the board at the invitation of former chairman Jim Quinn, who is no relation to the current chief Bill Quinn.

There is evidence to suggest that he never really got over the loss of his only son, John, who died from cancer five years ago at the age of 49.

Roger, who lived in Royton, joined Lancashire County Police in Rochdale as a teenaged cadet and rose to the rank of superintendent in Greater Manchester Police. His wife Pat was also in the police as a young WPC.

Amanda, their only daughter, lives in Saddleworth.

More than 200 tributes to Roger have been circulated on social media.

May all at Oldham Rugby add their own tributes to Roger, who once described his invitation to join the board as “a privilege and a pleasure.” Highlight of his time at Watersheddings was the opportunity to join the supporters’ party, with wife Pat and son John. that accompanied the squad to Australia in the World Club Championship in 1996.

No details are available yet about Roger’s funeral, but they will be circulated here in due course.
