Mums, dads, guardians . . . are the kids out of the room?

Good . . . so here is the news. Roary is back and looking different this season, as everyone will see tomorrow (Sunday) when we take on derby rivals Rochdale Hornets at Boundary Park (3pm kick-off) in the 1895 Cup. A win, even a draw, will see us top of group four and, as such, we would be in the last eight of a competition that will end at Wembley on a massive Rugby League Day there in June,

Our friends from Rochdale will be stretching every sinew, of course, in a bid to spoil our party. Roary knows that and understands fully that we would do exactly the same if the roles were reversed. He will be looking very smart for this special occasion and he urges all Oldham fans to get down to Boundary Park, not to look at him in his new Sunday best, but to make a lot of noise like Kev and to cheer our lads home.

As an aside, our popular mascot will be looking out for Nicola from Amari. She might be from St Helens and a bit of a Saints fan, but the way she has taken to our team and become a genuine Roughyed in just a few months is quite extraordinary and proves the pulling power of a club that’s going places.

Good stuff Nicola ! Goof stuff Roary !

Nathan Murgatroyd. who has been looking after Roary for 13 years, has been working behind the scenes to create a new costume.

The previous costume was more than 20 years’ old. It had been repaired a few times and, to be honest, it was looking very tired and in ned of replacement.

During the off season Nathan has been in discussions with Katie Bennett, manageress of Spindles Town Square Shopping, which has formed a strong partnership with Oldham RLFC 1876. From this. the new costume will be sponsored by Spindles. Thanks Spindles ! Roary will make sure you won’t be disappointed. He’s like that. It’s in his nature

So what do we tell the children, many of whom believe loveable Roary to be a real lion with a roar that doesn’t match his compelling personality and who has an unbounded love for all things Roughyed ?

Is it a regeneration like Dr Who? No, it’s easier than that . . . he’s been to see all his old mates back home in Africa and he’s had a makeover – new hair, new teeth and a glowing tan, the new Roary with new clothes to match for a new season – and a new era.

More news to follow soon about the new Roary and his Kids Club.
