The grand old man of the 1950s

FORMER Oldham winger John Etty, who loves nothing better than to talk about the old days, sends his best wishes to all Oldham fans via John Chadwick, who visited him in a Fleetwood Care Home last night.

The last surviving member of that great Oldham side of the 1950s, John is a grand old man of 97, who is still in love with Rugby League, watches the game on television and is always keen to get hold of Oldham scores.

Said John (Chadwick):

“I took him this week’s League Express and he was delighted to get some reading material about his favourite sport. He knows what’s going on at the club and he is delighted to think that we have a good chance of going up this year and can also do well in the cup competitions.

“He isn’t quite as switched-on as he used to be, but for a man of 97 he’s wonderful and it’s so uplifting to chat with him for a while and recall the days when he could play a bit !”

He is still with his wife Cath, who is 98 and in the same Care Home.
