1895 Cup run over after 46–12 loss to York

ROUGHYEDS were on the end of a humbling 46-12 defeat as York took full advantage of an indisciplined Oldham performance in the first forty, scoring nearly a point a minute.

Oldham came to the LNER Community Stadium and threw the ball about, but too often passes were wayward in the disjointed Roughyeds attacks.

It was a similar start that had seen Oldham go 18-0 down against Swinton last week, with Oldham having not learned their lessons.

Boss Sean Long made several changes from that game with Cian Tyrer, Mackenzie Turner and Jordan Paga all coming in to the 17, but he did not get the response he was looking for.

It took just five minutes for York to get on the scoresheet – and they were virtually unrelenting for the full forty.

Oldham gave themselves a mountain to climb, having thrown away any possession which came their way coupled with several penalties conceded.

Roughyeds were dangerous on the ball, when they had it, but too often they gave away possession under no real pressure.

Oldham were guilty of over-playing when Mackenzie Turner was bundled into touch on the 20 metre line.

In the subsequent set, the first real chance York had, it was Myles Harrison who forced was way through past Jordan Turner to score.

York didn’t have to work much for their second, with a play-the-ball error – and a subsequent penalty – giving Andrew Henderson’s men good field position for Liam Harris to sneak in with a dummy close to the line.

Every time York went near Oldham’s line, they found their way over and next up it was Will Dagger who scored after a delayed Richie Myler pass exposed a gap in the Roughyeds defence.

Jordan Paga was introduced off the bench, and he instilled some fire out of dummy half, but even he couldn’t halt the barrage of the York attacks.

A silly push off the ball, when Oldham were in possession, resulted in another try for York with Dagger getting his second after pouncing on a grubber to the line.

Their fifth came through a Dagger line-break inside their own forty with Myler the beneficiary as he scored under the sticks.

Oldham finally got into gear when Astley scored direct from the scrum, but any chance of gaining a foothold was thrown away when Roughyeds spilled the subsequent York kick-off – the result of which was another try for Myler.

Next up was Conor Fitzsimmons who forced his way past several Oldham tacklers to find his way to the line for York’s seventh.

There was some great individual play by Joe Wardle to break through the York line which was finished off by Owen Farnworth who provided a great support run to score.

The final ten minutes was scrappy to say the least, and there was enough time for AJ Towse to go over in the corner to top off a bad day at the office for Oldham.

After several weeks of impressive victories, back-to-back losses have brought Oldham right back down to earth ahead of their League One campaign which gets underway on March 17 away at Workington.
