Saddleworth girls side up and running

PATHWAYS for women’s and girls rugby league in Oldham are growing as Saddleworth School’s newly-formed under-14s girls got their first taste of rugby league at the North West Counties Festival.

Marking a step forward for women’s rugby league in Oldham, the side put up a fight against experienced opponents Deneary, Rainford and St Peters with them losing out by two tries, before securing a draw with Crompton House.

Saddleworth were in control in the final game against Crompton House but they could not hold on after their fellow Oldhamers staged a comeback.

Jack Burns, also part of the Oldham Lions set-up, has been delivering sessions to the under-14s side on behalf of Oldham RLFC.

In another sign of the growth of girls rugby league, Saddleworth Rangers held a successful open day on Saturday March 9 for girls aged between 12 to 16.

Those who did not attend, but are interested in giving the sport a go should contact 07986 761556.
