Cian tops League one try scorers

CIAN Tyrer is way out in front in the list of Betfred League One try scorers with 11 – ten for Oldham and one for Workington which he scored while on short-term loan with the Cumbrians.

The left-winger scored his try for the Cumbrians and was then recalled by Oldham, scoring SIX at Hunslet and, in the very next match against Cornwall, adding another FOUR, giving him 11 in total, five more than Ellis Robson of Keighley Cougars and Joe Hartley of Rochdale Hornets, a former Oldham back, who are in joint second place, each with six.

There are six players on five, including Hornets half-back Lewis Else, who scored a try hat-trick in the 68-4 win against Newcastle Thunder which lifted Rochdale into fifth place.

Back to Tyrer and he also kicked three goals against Cornwall and two at Hunslet to give him a total of 54 points and joint leadership of the ‘most points’ section with Keighley goalkicker Jack Miller.

Jamie Ellis, meanwhile, is second to Miller in the ‘goals’ list and third behind Tyrer and Miller on ‘points’, writes ROGER HALSTEAD.

While Tyrer’s ten tries in successive matches WAS a club record, his 50 points was not. That belongs to Andy Ballard with 58. On 29/3/09, against Workington at home, Ballard kicked nine goals and scored three tries (30 points) and in the next match against Lezignan in the Challenge Cup at BP he kicked ten goals and crossed for two tries (28 points) .

A month later, on 2/5/09, the Wigan lad set the club’s points-in-a-match record with 34 points in a match (13 goals and two tries) in a 78-10 win at London Skolars. That was equalled twice later by Chris Baines and Lewis Palfrey.

Palfrey also passed the barrier of 50 points in two matches with seven goals and a try (18 points) against Keighley and 11 goals and three tries (34 points) in a big win against Hemel, but the then club captain fell short by six of knocking Ballard off his points-in-consecutive-games pedestal.

So there you have it. The Roughyeds story right now is all about records . . . and Cian is up there making it happen.
